Message Queue Telemetry Transport / MQTT – Smart Factory Glossary

Message Queue Telemetry Transport, or MQTT for short, is a network protocol for the exchange of messages between machines. MQTT has been specifically developed for machine-to-machine communication in the Internet of Things (IoT). It uses a central server for the exchange of information between sender and recipient, which is called broker. Each device can send and receive messages.

The MQTT protocol was developed as early as 1999 and is also known as SCADA protocol. Since 2013, MQTT is the standard IoT protocol. MPDV's IIoT Connector also uses Message Queue Telemetry Transport to integrate machines into manufacturing IT. Via MQTT, the IIoT Connector sends a machine's operating signal to a Manufacturing Execution System like HYDRA X by MPDV where the data is then further processed.
