Manufacturing IT – Smart Factory Glossary

Manufacturing IT is the general term used for applications of information technology specifically designed to support manufacturing with the aim of improving production processes and increasing efficiency. It includes systems and solutions for production planning, process control, and quality management. Manufacturing IT plays a decisive role in the digitalization and automation of manufacturing processes.

Manufacturing IT can be:

• Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
• Advanced Planning and Scheduling System (APS)
• Machine Data Collection (MDC)

• Production Data Collection (PDC)

   

Requirements for modern manufacturing IT and the solutions from MPDV

The VDI guideline 5600 describes classic tasks of manufacturing IT in detail. At the same time, the guideline specifies new requirements for Manufacturing Execution Systems resulting from constantly changing framework conditions. According to the VDI Guideline 5600, sheet 7, an important development trend is the function to integrate different providers or different platforms that a future MES must fulfill.
