Discrete Manufacturing – Smart Factory Glossary
Discrete manufacturing is a type of production where individual, distinguishable units are produced. These units can be counted, measured individually, and usually produced using specific processes and tools as required. Typical products manufactured using discrete manufacturing include electronics, household appliances, furniture, and cars. Each product consists of a specific number of individual parts or components that are fabricated in an assembly process. A common example is the automotive industry, where vehicles are assembled from numerous individual components such as body and electronic parts and the engine.
One particular strength of discrete manufacturing is its flexibility in adapting products to individual customer requirements. Individual units can be easily modified to create different variants. The following video explains in simple terms how such a just-in-sequence production of multiple variants works.
Support for discrete manufacturing: Software by MPDV
Manufacturing IT plays a crucial role in discrete manufacturing. This is where the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) HYDRA X can support companies by enabling seamless integration and monitoring of manufacturing processes. HYDRA X offers functions for monitoring machines and systems as well as recording production data. The Advanced Planning and Scheduling System (APS) FEDRA enables precise planning of production orders. This enables companies in discrete manufacturing to become more responsive, increase their efficiency, minimize downtime, and improve the quality of their products in the long term.
